Karen Shepherd selected to present at the 2024 Florida Mosquito Control Association

Karen Shepherd was selected to present a Dodd Short Course at the 2024 Florida Mosquito Control Association (FMCA). The Dodd Short Courses were established in 1984 and are commemorating the 40th anniversary.

Shepherd joined Mark Grazewski, accounting specialist, Collier County Mosquito Control District to present Administrative Management in Mosquito Control.

The audience of administrative employees, as well as directors and commissioners of mosquito control districts gained knowledge to broaden their skillsets in a variety of department operations.

This course discussed pertinent topics for appropriate record keeping for the administrative functions of mosquito control. Topics included the following:

  • leadership best practices
  • financial best practices (bids, cash management, PO software)
  • fleet management
  • basic public relations
  • safety in the workplace
  • job descriptions
  • performance evaluations
  • salary surveys

Karen Shepherd’s expertise in human resources helped leaders in the mosquito control districts to adopt leadership best practices and turn obstacles into opportunities. Karen’s keynote topic “6 Steps to Turn Obstacles Into Opportunities” provided the leaders with:

  1. Strategies to understand organization obstacles to allow leaders to contribute and implement initiatives that impact the organization’s overall strategic plan, objectives, culture, and bottom line.
  2. Techniques of how the six strategies may be used for an organization’s growth, restructuring, communicating with teams and/or departments, and managing change to align with an organization’s needs.
  3. Focused on leveraging the surprises and examining the emotions for the leadership to manage teams and make better decisions and recommendations to support an organization’s measured goals.

The Dodd Short Courses took place in Gainesville, Florida on January 31, 2024 at the
Hilton University of Florida Conference Center.
